Why it matters

The transition from primary to secondary school is one of the most significant milestones in a young person's life.

The Future Letters Project encourages pupils to pause, reflect and think positively about who they are becoming - before reconnecting with their younger selves years later through their own handwritten words.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost?

The project costs £4.99 per pupil.

This includes secure archiving, long-term storage, future address confirmation and tracked delivery years later when the pupil leaves secondary school.

Parents complete consent and payment (if required) online using the school’s dedicated registration link.

Is this extra work for staff?

We’ve designed the project to be as simple as possible for schools to run.

We provide guidance materials, parent information and a dedicated registration system, allowing teachers to focus mainly on delivering the classroom reflection activity itself.

What happens if pupils move house?

Before letters are returned, families are contacted through provided email addresses to confirm the correct delivery address.

This helps ensure letters safely reach pupils even if they have moved home since primary school.

When are letters returned?

Letters are written by pupils at the end of Year 6 before leaving primary school and are then returned when they leave secondary school years later.

The aim is to give pupils the opportunity to reconnect with their younger selves at another important milestone in their lives.

WHAT IF A PUPIL LOSES THEIR REFERENCE NUMBER?

Our secure database stores pupil and parent registration details alongside each archived letter.

Reference numbers help us identify letters more quickly, but we can still support retrieval using registered information where appropriate.

How are letters stored?

Letters are securely catalogued, archived and protected until their chosen delivery year.

We treat every letter as a personal keepsake and understand the importance of preserving them safely over time and in line with GDPR regulations.

What do pupils write about?

Pupils are encouraged to reflect on:

  • their ambitions,
  • future careers,
  • favourite memories,
  • hobbies,
  • friendships,
  • personality,
  • and hopes for the future.

Each letter becomes a meaningful snapshot of who they were at the end of primary school.

IS THE PROJECT LINKED TO WELLBEING OR TRANSITION SUPPORT?

Yes.

The Future Letters Project encourages self-reflection, aspiration building and emotional expression during an important stage of transition between primary and secondary education.

DO TEACHERS OR PARENTS READ THE LETTERS?

No.

Letters are personal to each pupil and remain sealed until they are delivered years later.

CAN SCHOOLS RUN THIS EVERY YEAR?

Absolutely.

Schools are welcome to take part each year with their new Year 6 cohort, and many may choose to make The Future Letters Project part of their yearly transition or leavers experience.

To help us prepare registration systems, archiving capacity and future delivery planning for each cohort, we encourage schools to register their interest by 31st March each year ahead of their planned summer activity.
